The Clogau Gold mines in North Wales was the biggest producer of gold in the UK. The mine closed in 1990 after more than a century of production. The mines were discovered by chance by a young shepherd boy in 1834, who found some strange yellow stones whilst walking through a field near Dolgellau. It was Joseph Pritchard, who recognised that they were not common pebbles but gold ore. He took one to his father and they decided to take it to a local doctor, Dr William Roberts, who confirmed that it was indeed gold ore. They went back to the same field and found more of the rocks which are called ‘carbonates’ today but were then known as ‘black ore’.
The doctor persuaded his brother-in-law, David Davies of Llanrhyddol, businessman and landowner to invest £100 in the venture with him. They set up an underground operation at Llechw
